Disney is not only a great vacation destination for families and those with children, but it is also an extremely accommodating place for older folks. Guests who are traveling with older generations will find it easy to have a great time at Disney for their entire family. With the right amount of planning and utilization of resources, traveling to Disney with your entire family can be enjoyable and fun for all. If you are thinking of traveling to Disney World with someone who is older, or you have an upcoming vacation that is already scheduled, then check out these tips!
Rent A Wheelchair Or ECV
Any guest with mobility issues should consider renting a wheelchair or ECV for their vacation. Disney World involves a lot of walking that can wear down any guest, but especially those of an older generation. Disney offers wheelchair and ECV rental services inside all theme parks and Disney Springs. Rentals are daily for ECVs and daily or length-of-stay for wheelchairs. Currently, the rates are $12 per day or $10 per day for length of stay for wheelchairs, and $65 per day for ECVs. Guests should note that Disney’s wheelchairs and ECVs cannot leave the park. If guests are in need of wheelchairs or ECVs that they can take with them to their resort they should work with Disney’s third-party affiliate ScooterBug, or other third-party rental services.
Stay DVC
Staying DVC is a great option for those traveling with older generations because their multi-bedroom villas allows all guests to stay together. You won’t have to worry about your elderly relative or friend when they stay with you, and the extra space you gain by staying DVC is extremely valuable. DVC villas also have several accommodations by request like wheelchair-accessible rooms and rooms for those who are hard of hearing or deaf.
Take Advantage Of Disney Transportation
Utilizing Disney transportation is essential when traveling with older generations. Disney offers busses, monorail, and Skyliner transportation between resorts and parks. Disney busses are equipped for wheelchair and ECV transportation, in addition to the Skyliner and monorail. Guests of certain DVC resorts have quick and easy access to the parks via monorail and Skyliner, so many find it preferable to stay at these resorts. Resorts on the monorail line include Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Disney’s Riviera Resort is located on the Skyliner route. All other resorts have Disney bus transportation or water taxi.
Take Frequent AC Breaks And Stay Hydrated
When traveling to Disney World it is extremely important for all guests to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the AC. Free cups of water are available at any quick-service restaurant with a soda fountain, and bottles of water are for sale throughout the parks. Guests can also bring their own water into the parks. The Florida heat can become brutal. In order to prevent overheated in the elderly, take frequent breaks indoors via shows, dark rides, or stores.
