Disney Vacation Club Holding Accounts: Everything You Need To Know

Disney Vacation Club Sign at Saratoga Springs

Over the past few years, we all have seen how quickly plans can change. Sometimes flexibility is needed when plans change. Luckily Disney Vacation Club members have an easy way to cancel or modify DVC reservations without losing their points, if they are canceled at least 1 day prior to their reserved check-in day.

If you are a current or prospective DVC member, you will want to familiarize yourself with Disney Vacation Club’s cancellation policy to avoid penalties or forfeiture of your DVC points.

What Is A Holding Account?

Think of a Holding Account as a temporary “parking space” for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club reservation that was modified or canceled 30 days to 1 day prior to the reserved Check-In date.

Holding Account Restrictions

Vacation Points in your Holding Account will be valid to book another reservation with, until the end of your Use Year, after which they will expire. You can use them the same as normal Vacation Points, except that reservations using Vacation Points that are in a holding account must be made within 60 or fewer days before the new Check-In date. Also, you won’t be able to bank or borrow any vacation points in a Holding Account.

In the event of cancelling a reservation that is using banked or borrowed Vacation Points, the banked or borrowed points are not returned to their original Use Year. They will remain as banked or borrowed Vacation Points and stay in the Use Year of the canceled reservation.

Here is a summary of the usage restrictions of Vacation Points in a holding account:

  • Vacation Points in a holding account can be used for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new Check-In date
  • Vacation Points in a holding account cannot be banked or borrowed
  • Vacation Points in a holding account must be used by the end of the Use Year or they expire

When Are My DVC Points Placed In A Holding Account?

In the event that you are canceling within a range of 30 to 1 days prior to your reserved check-in date, any points used for the reservation will be placed into a holding account. If you are modifying a reservation 30 to 1 days prior to your reserved check-in date, any points not used for the new reservation will be put into a holding account.

You can see the various cancellation / modification deadlines in the chart below:

Holding Account Chart

Cancellation / Modification Date
(prior to check-in)
Penalty Holding Account
31+ Days No penalty No – points used for a cancelled reservation are returned to your account and any points not used for a reservation modification are returned to your account
30 – 1 Days No penalty Yes – points used for a cancelled reservation will be put into a holding account and any points not used for a reservation modification will be put into a holding account
On Check-In Day Forfeiture of
all points
All points used for the reservation are forfeited and are not returned

How Do I Prevent My Vacation Points Being Placed In A Holding Account?

To avoid any of your Vacation Points being put into a holding account, simply cancel or modify your reservation 31 or more days prior to the check-in date. For a cancellation, all of the Vacation Points used for the cancelled reservation are returned to your account and can be used without any future restrictions. For a modification, any points not used for the new reservation are returned to your account and can be used without any future restrictions.

Can I Transfer Vacation Points In My Holding Account?

Yes, vacation points can be transferred from one Disney Vacation Club account to another, even if the points are in a Holding Account.

Please note that Vacation Points that are currently in a holding account will remain in a holding account after they are transferred and will need to be booked according to the same holding account restrictions as mentioned above.
