How to Prepare for the Lion King 30th Anniversary Celebration This Summer

The Lion King at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

I don’t know about you, but Disney’s “The Lion King” is one of my all-time favorite films. I love the wholesome tale of young Simba overcoming his shame, becoming fearless, and reclaiming his proper position as ruler of the Pride Lands. It is hard to believe that the film was released thirty years ago, but thankfully, it has stood the test of time and will continue to be beloved by future generations. If you are headed to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park this Summer, read on to learn about some of the ways you and your family can have a wild time celebrating this classic film.

Step One: Have a Disney’s “The Lion King” Movie Night

Before you visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom, make what my family affectionately calls “Simba’s Wild Mix” and watch “The Lion King” with your family. You might be wondering how to make “Simba’s Wild Mix”; if so, I have included the recipe below. You have been warned, though, that it is very addicting.

Simba’s Wild Mix
2 (7.5 ounce) bags of Cheetos Paws
3 (3.29ounce) bags of Orville Redenbacher’s Movie Theater Butter Microwave Popcorn
1 (16-ounce) bag of Snyder’s of Hanover Mini Pretzels
A handful of chocolate chips to taste

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl, serve, sit back, relax, and enjoy “The Lion King” movie.

Step Two: Enjoy the Festival of the Lion King

Once you arrive at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, attend the Festival of the Lion King. This live-action, joyous show will keep you and your family on the edge of your seats and bring smiles, too. The show premieres at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 5:00 PM every day, so there are plenty of opportunities to see it. Trust me, it is worth your time. You might even want to see it twice!

Pro Tip: Be sure to arrive early to participate in a fun pre-show activity and ensure you get a good seat to see the action. The theatre fills up rather quickly.

Step Three: Strike a Pose with Rafiki and Timon

Timon and Rafiki are the sweetest, aren’t they? Do you ever find yourself watching “The Lion King” wishing you could give them a big hug? If so, you are in luck because you can do just that at Conservation Station at Rafiki’s Planet Watch.

Pro Tip: Take a character selfie. There will be Disney Photo Pass Photographers nearby to snap professional shots, but if you want a cool selfie, have your cellphone handy. It just might be the most incredible selfie you ever take. Be sure to have an autograph book handy, too. They just might sign it for you.

Step Four: Get a Pumba Popcorn Bucket

Who doesn’t love Pumba? He is fun, hilarious, and larger than life. What is not to like? If you are a Pumba lover like me, grab an adorable, limited edition Pumba-themed popcorn bucket available at the popcorn stands throughout Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. It is the perfect souvenir for movie lovers and Lion King fans alike.
