Exciting transformations are on the horizon at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with significant updates announced for two beloved attractions. MuppetVision 3D will soon close to make way for a new land based on Monsters, Inc., while changes to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will bring a fresh focus on the Muppets. Here’s what you need to know about these upcoming developments and their potential impact on park experiences.
MuppetVision 3D Comes to a Close
Disney has announced that Muppet*Vision 3D will permanently close at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This change is part of the plans to develop a new Monsters, Inc.-themed land in the current Grand Avenue area. Originally planned for the Star Wars Launch Bay area, the Monstropolis-based land will include a suspended roller coaster inspired by the movie’s door transport system, as well as dining, shopping, and possibly a new theater experience taking over the MuppetVision 3D space.
The closure of MuppetVision 3D marks the end of an era for the attraction, which debuted in 1991 as the final project Jim Henson worked on before his death. Although Disney has confirmed the digital version of the MuppetVision film will be preserved, there are no guarantees the show will return to a theme park setting in the future.
A New Role for the Muppets
The Muppets aren’t leaving Hollywood Studios entirely. Disney has announced plans to reimagine the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, replacing Aerosmith with a Muppets-themed overlay. While details are still emerging, the ride’s new story is expected to feature Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem as headliners, along with appearances by other fan-favorites like Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.
The reimagined Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will focus on a “rockin’ music festival” theme, updating both the ride experience and the associated gift shop. This transformation also addresses long-standing rumors about changes to the attraction, which surfaced after accusations against Aerosmith’s lead singer in recent years.
What Do These Changes Mean for Guests?
The closure of MuppetVision 3D offers an opportunity for Disney to bring new experiences to Hollywood Studios, especially with the addition of Monstropolis. For fans of the Muppets, the shift to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster may provide a fun and energetic new way to enjoy these iconic characters.
Although no closure dates have been announced for either attraction, Disney has assured guests that they’ll have time to experience MuppetVision 3D and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in their current forms before updates are made.
Reflecting on the Updates
The removal of MuppetVision 3D and the reimagining of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster demonstrate Disney’s ongoing effort to evolve and grow its theme park offerings. While these changes may bring mixed emotions for longtime fans, they also present exciting possibilities for future park visits.
