What To Pack For Rainy Season At Disney World

Disney Rainy Season

The official rainy season in Florida is from May 15th to October 15th. During these five months the state receives 70% of its annual rainfall. However, guests planning a trip to the Sunshine State and Disney World during this time should not let this fact deter you from having an amazing time in the parks. With some planning and preparation you can ensure that being caught in one of Florida’s signature downpours won’t put a damper on your experience at Disney. With the Florida rainy season just around the corner, here are a few tips on what to pack for the rainy season at Disney World.

Proper Footwear

While you might think that sneakers are the best option for hours of walking around the parks, the most appropriate footwear to choose for the rainy season at Disney is sandals. Not just any sandal that will have you slipping and sliding down the walkways as soon as the precipitation starts, but a properly crafted sandal that is built for both wet and dry environments. Some Disney fan favorites are Chacos, Keens and Tevas which each offer a very comfortable, durable sandal that won’t soak up the water like a sponge and will let your feet dry off quickly as soon as the rain stops. Lightweight Waterproof Backpack

Anytime of year, a backpack is an essential item to pack on your trip to Disney. However, during the rainy season, be sure to bring a lightweight backpack that is also waterproof. If you’ve never been stuck in a Florida rainstorm before, Floridians will tell you it only takes seconds to be completely soaked, that includes the items inside your bag. For a trip during the rainy season, consider a waterproof option like this packable backpack from Amazon for only $17.

Poncho, Rain Jacket or Umbrella

While this might seem like an obvious choice, thousands of park guests forget to pack their ponchos while visiting the parks every year and end up desperately buying one of Disney’s very cute but very pricey ponchos. While a Disney poncho might be a great keepsake from your trip, at approximately $12 a piece the cost quickly adds up for a large family. Instead, opt for a less expensive version like this family pack of 5 reusable ponchos or $12 or this set of two lightweight rain jackets that fold flat for $13. Alternatively, a compact umbrella that fits easily in your backpack would also be a good choice.

Quick-drying Clothes

Remember when packing for your trip to Disney during the rainy season that it’s not only raining, it’s also hot and humid. The best choice of clothing for this season are lightweight clothes that dry quickly. Here are some Dos and Don’ts for rainy season clothing.

Do:

  • Pack lightweight fabrics like cotton chinos or hiking shorts that will dry quickly.
  • Opt for shorts or ankle length pants as these will keep you cooler and help you dry off faster after a rainstorm.
  • Layer your clothing and pack your top layer when the rain starts. Once you’re inside and likely wet, take out your dry top layer and protect yourself from the freezing indoor air conditioning.

Don’t:

  • Opt for jeans, silk and suede as these keep our bodies very warm and do not dry well.
  • Choose fabrics that are too lightweight like linen which will stick to your skin when wet.
  • Wear thin, white fabrics that might become transparent when wet.

Florida’s rain doesn’t need to turn your vacation into an unpleasant experience. Keep these tips on what to pack for the rainy season at Disney World in mind when getting ready for your next Disney vacation.
