Walt Disney Imagineering has offered a look at just how tall Villains Land will stand at Magic Kingdom. Through a series of balloon tests at both Villains Land and the neighboring Piston Peak National Park, we now have a clearer picture of how these new areas will rise above the park. Here is what the tests reveal and why they matter for the guest experience.
What a Balloon Test Actually Shows

A balloon test is one of the early steps in the construction process. Crews float balloons at the planned high points of buildings and theming elements, marking the top elevations of structures that have not been built yet. This gives Imagineers a real view of how new construction will affect existing sightlines around the park.
The goal is to understand how a project fits into its surroundings before major work begins. By seeing where a balloon sits against the skyline, the team can judge whether a structure will blend in or stand out from key vantage points across Magic Kingdom.
Two Balloons Over Villains Land
The tests placed two balloons over the Villains Land site, and each one points to a major element of the future land. The blue balloon is believed to mark Maleficent’s fortress, while the teal balloon likely represents the high point of the Magic Mirror dark ride.
Both balloons floated at heights well above the nearby Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. That difference gives a sense of how prominent these new structures will be. Villains Land is shaping up to be one of the taller additions in this part of the park.
Maleficent’s Fortress and the 200-Foot Ceiling
Disney’s theme parks follow a height ceiling of 200 feet for any themed element. Maleficent’s fortress is expected to push close to that limit, which would make it one of the tallest features in Magic Kingdom.
The fortress is set to serve as the high point of the roller coaster theming that runs through Villains Land. Placing the tallest element at the center of the coaster gives the land a clear visual anchor and ties the ride experience to the story of the area.
Where You Will Be Able to See It
Because of its planned height, Maleficent’s fortress is expected to be visible from several spots around the park. The balloon tests suggest guests will be able to spot it from Fantasyland near Mickey’s PhilharMagic and from Tomorrowland near the Tomorrowland Launch Depot gift shop.
Those two locations are only the start. If the final height holds close to what the balloons showed, the fortress should be visible from many other points around Magic Kingdom, drawing the eye toward the new land from across the park.
Piston Peak National Park Rises Too
The balloon tests were not limited to Villains Land. A separate balloon marked the high point of Piston Peak National Park, representing the snowy Piston Peak mountain. This peak is the tallest point in that land.
While it sits apart from the Villains Land structures, the Piston Peak mountain adds another notable high point to this section of the park. Together, the two projects will reshape the skyline in a meaningful way once construction is complete.
