Curry. Matcha-White chocolate. Butter and soy sauce. Strawberry cheesecake. Honey. What do all these flavors have in common? Popcorn! Popcorn in Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea, that is. The Disney parks in Japan are full of unique, questionable and enticing snacks that attract visitors from all over the globe. In this article, I will be sharing delicious and rare snacks/drinks from each of the Disney Japan parks that you should try when you visit. Let’s get started!
1. Green Alien Dumplings
These enticing and chewy mochi dumplings are a must try. The cup holds 3 green alien mochi with different fillings: vanilla custard, chocolate crème and strawberry crème. In my humble opinion, I really enjoyed these mochi snacks because the texture and the filling were both satisfying and tasty. These can be found in both Disney Sea (in a cart across from the Indiana Jones ride) and in Disneyland Tokyo (Tomorrowland). These mochi dumplings are not only delightful to consume but are picture perfect for the ‘gram.
2. Sea Salt Monaka Ice Cream
Disney Sea is home to Mermaid Lagoon, a picturesque external and internal land where the sea and marine creatures come to life! Located inside the land, is a play area adorned with beautiful sea décor that feels like you have stepped foot in Atlantica. There is a food cart, near the theater in Mermaid Lagoon, that sells a bizarre yet appealing ice cream sandwich. The sea salt vanilla ice cream is enveloped in a crunchy wafer shell, and the inside is coated with a raspberry sauce. Together, this combination is heavenly both texturally, flavor-wise and gets extra points for cuteness!
3. Gyoza Sausage Bun
An interesting and equally as yummy savory snack can be found in Disney Sea’s Nautilus Galley in Mysterious Island. The gyoza sausage bun consists of a thick, smooth dough, filled with ground pork, veggies, sesame oil and soy sauce. While not the ideal choice for vegetarians or vegans, this is a snack catered to those who prefer to eat meat and want to enjoy a simple Asian delicacy.
4. Iced Fruit Tea
This iced, black tea (Gogo-no-Kocha) was refreshing, not sweet and had notes of peach, diced apples, and other cocktail fruits. It had a slight bitterness, but it was not off-putting. I was able to purchase it at the food cart in the American Waterfront in Disney Sea. The drink all in all makes for a cool, palate escape that relaxes your mind, body and soul. The drink is also available as a boozy version (with white wine or red wine instead of tea) and varies in peach or berry as the main flavor.
5. Popcorn
At the beginning of the article, I gave a sneak peek on Japan’s fascination with giving popcorn exclusive flavors. For those who go to Disneyland or Disney World solely for popcorn, traveling to Disneyland Tokyo and Disney Sea should be on your bucket list. The popcorn flavors vary from salty: garlic-shrimp (you heard that right), curry, black pepper, soy sauce and butter, roast beef, to sweet: milk-chocolate, caramel. Matcha-white chocolate, and occasionally festive flavors such as strawberry cheesecake. What are you waiting for Disney and popcorn lovers? Japan is the place for you!
6. Mickey Fruit Popsicle
This ice cream bar is so beautiful in appearance and refreshing in flavor. The Mickey/Minnie head popsicle comes in two flavors, tropical fruit and peach & raspberry. However, the most popular is the tropical fruit flavor, bursting with orange and pineapple notes. You can find this popsicle in both parks, at select food carts. This snack is great for our vegan/dairy-free friends, who also deserve to enjoy special treats that won’t affect their health.
This article only portrayed a select number of unique snacks; however Disney Sea and Disneyland Tokyo are full of food options, that range from normal, unique to bizarre. All in all, the flavor combos are sure to be appetizing to the intended audience. I hope, dear reader, you get an opportunity to visit Japan and all its glorious food options, specifically in the Disney parks. Sayonara!
