One of the best parts of a Disney vacation is all the incredible merchandise that is offered throughout the theme parks, as well as in Disney Springs or Downtown Disney, or even the many Disney-owned Resort Hotels located in Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort. Many times, limited edition or unique items are on sale that can’t be purchased elsewhere, and it can be so hard to resist snatching them up, and taking them home!

What if you begin to regret your purchase and need to return an item, or which to exchange an item? What is the return policy for merchandise at Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort? In this article we’ll explain the policy and walk you through all the exceptions as well.

Merchandise Return Policy

The general return policy states that many items can be returned in new condition, meaning it has been unopened and is in its original packaging, within 30 days of the date of purchase.

Your return or exchange can be refused if more than 30 days have elapsed since its original purchase date, or if the merchandise have been worn or used.

Merchandise Returned With Original Receipt Within 30 Days Of Purchase

You can receive a full refund, which will be refunded to the same form of payment that was used to purchase the merchandise. If you had purchased the item using a credit card, you must have the card present, and the account must still be valid. In the case the credit card is not present or still valid, you will be given a Disney Parks Merchandise Credit.

It is also possible to request a refund over the phone or by email. In this case, if the purchase was made in cash, the guest will receive a refund in the form of a Disney Gift Card eGift.

Merchandise Returned Without Original Receipt Within 30 Days Of Purchase

In the case that you do not have the original receipt from your purchase, your refund may be issued in the form of a Disney Parks Merchandise Credit. In many cases, guests will be asked to present a valid government issued photo ID to prove their identity.

Disney can limit the number of returns that can be made without your original receipt, so there is a limit to how many of these transactions you can perform. There is currently no official number of transactions that are allowed which is listed online.

Special Products & Exceptions

Items Sold With Special Conditions

In some cases, products can be sold with special conditions listed such as:

  • “as-is”
  • “all sales final”
  • “no returns or exchanges”
  • “no refunds, exchanges or returns”

In these cases, returns can not be accepted for these special condition items. This verbiage will be listed clearly at the time of purchase so you won’t be surprised later on.

Items That Cannot Be Returned / Exchanged

There are some items that can not be returned or exchange, which includes:

  • original artwork
  • jewelry items priced $150 or higher
  • MagicBand products
  • subscriptions
  • memberships
  • personalized / special order merchandise

Items That Can Only Be Exchanged For The Same Item

There are some items that can only be exchanged for the same merchandise or title, and only if damaged of deemed as defective:

  • DVDs
  • Blu-ray
  • audio products
  • video games
  • software merchandise

Disney Gift Cards

Disney gift cards can not be redeemed for cash, but unused gift cards can be returned for the full original amount. The return will be made to whatever form of payment was originally used to purchase the Disney Gift Card. In the case of Disney Gift Cards, gift receipts are not considered an original sales receipt.

Gift-With-Purchase & Purchase-With-Purchase Items

If you have received a Gift-with-purchase item or or purchase-with-purchase item, they are required to be returned along with the original item if you wish to return the original item.

As with many things in life, Disney’s return policy can always change! This will be at Disney’s discretion, and can be done without prior notification, so be sure to check with the retailer you’re purchasing from if you would like all the up-to-date policies and procedures.
