Disney Cruise Line has recently released exciting new details about its upcoming stage show, “Disney The Tale of Moana”. This Broadway-style production will debut exclusively on the Disney Treasure in December 2024.
A Pacific Islands Adventure Comes to Life
The show features set design and music deeply rooted in the culture of the Pacific Islands, the inspiration behind the classic coming-of-age tale. This innovative production will immerse audiences in a transformational adventure across land and sea. It is the first stage adaptation inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios film.
Puppetry Magic on Stage
Behind the incredible puppetry, bringing some of the characters to life on stage, is Disney Live Entertainment’s creative director of puppetry and articulation, Jeff Conover. He collaborated with master puppet designer Michael Curry, known for his creations in Disney’s Tony Award-winning musical “The Lion King” on Broadway. Together, they’ll introduce a puppet of a scale Disney Cruise Line has never before produced: the fiery Te Kā. In a dramatic turn of events, the giant Te Kā puppet will transform into the gentle island goddess, Te Fiti.
New Song Debuts
Moana and Maui will perform the song “Warrior Face” for the first time in this stage show. This number will be part of a lineup of classic favorites from the Grammy-Award winning soundtrack, including “You’re Welcome,” “We Know The Way” and “How Far I’ll Go.”
Setting the Scene
The show will begin in the modern day on the fictional island of Motunui. The set design will be filled with elements of the brilliant cultures of the Pacific Islands. Through vibrant dance and songs in a mix of languages including Tuvaluan, Tokelauan and Samoan, audiences will learn how the ocean chooses young Moana for an incredible journey.
A Transformational Journey
In a pivotal scene, The Walt Disney Theatre will transform from the island of Motunui into the open ocean as Moana embarks on her voyage. Twinkling stars will swirl overhead and a giant, glowing manta ray will emerge, symbolizing the spirit of Gramma Tala and illuminating the way for Moana on her journey to save her people.
Joining a Lineup of Fan-Favorite Shows
“Disney The Tale of Moana” will join a dazzling lineup of fan-favorite shows like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure” in the Walt Disney Theatre onboard the Disney Treasure.
A New Chapter in Disney Entertainment
In conclusion, “Disney The Tale of Moana” promises to be a breathtaking addition to the Disney Cruise Line’s entertainment offerings. This innovative production not only brings a beloved movie to life but also celebrates the rich cultures of the Pacific Islands. With its spellbinding puppetry, new musical numbers, and immersive set design, the show is set to captivate audiences when it debuts in December 2024.
