Some guests might think that all Disney attractions are based on Disney films, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! It wasn’t until more recent years that Disney added more attractions based on Disney films than original attractions, however many of these original attractions still remain. In fact, some of these original attractions went on to inspire Disney films later on! If you are planning a visit to Disney World soon and want to experience these original attractions then continue reading to learn more about them!

Haunted Mansion – Magic Kingdom

While this attraction has inspired films throughout the years, it was a completely original idea during the time of its construction and development. Haunted Mansion was being worked on in Disneyland in the early 1960s and was designed by top Disney Imagineers and supervised by Walt Disney. His death ultimately delayed the project when ended up opening in 1969 in Disneyland and in 1971 in Disney World. This attraction became quite popular for its storytelling through scenery, and for its unique illusions.

Pirates Of The Caribbean – Magic Kingdom

Another attraction that inspired a franchise of Disney films but was entirely original upon development is Pirates of the Caribbean. This attraction was one of the last rides that Walt Disney himself had a say in designing and developing before his passing. Pirates of the Caribbean told a unique story of swashbuckling pirates through audio-animatronics, music, and scenery. This attraction was a smash hit in Disneyland and was later moved to Disney World where it also saw great success. After the popular film series with the same name, the attraction was updated to include characters and other elements from the movies.

Journey Into Your Imagination With Figment – EPCOT

One of EPCOT’s first attractions and original characters involved Figment, a lovable purple dragon who represented imagination. Journey Into Your Imagination with Figment is the only instance of these characters as this attraction was not based on any Disney film or characters. Guests love Journey Into Your Imagination With Figment because of its charm, and many guests consider Figment to be the mascot of EPCOT.

Spaceship Earth – EPCOT

Another EPCOT attraction that remains completely original is Spaceship Earth. Located inside the iconic EPCOT ball, this attraction utilizes a concept that is lovingly called: Edutainment. Spaceship Earth educates while it entertains and takes guests through the history of mankind. Beginning with the invention of fire and ending with the invention of the internet, this attraction showcases progress through intricate scenes with audio-animatronics. Spaceship Earth is a celebration of humans, and is an iconic EPCOT attraction.
