We finally have a closer look at when to expect the opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run! Disney Parks chief Josh D’Amaro made the announcement at 2022 D23 Expo that Guests can expect to see this long awaited attraction open in Spring 2023!
The TRON attraction was originally announced five years ago at D23 Expo 2017, and Guests began to see updates on its construction in 2020. The ride was supposed to open for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration, but construction progress was halted due to the pandemic. There has been so much buzz for this ride for so long, especially since it will be one of the most thrilling roller coasters in Magic Kingdom Park.
This attraction will be an exact copy of TRON Lightcycle / Run in Shanghai Disneyland. The structure of the ride and the story will be the same. Guests will board their lightcycles as Team Blue and be propelled at 60 mph (at its fastest) in a race against Team Orange. Guests will need to race through eight energy gates in order to win.
The TRON coaster is based on the film franchise that included both the original, TRON that was released in 1982, and TRON: Legacy that was released in 2010. Chris Beatty, Portfolio Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, stated that the storyline of TRON Lightcycle / Run will take place after the events of TRON: Legacy.
We cannot wait to enter the newest gateway into the digital world with TRON Lightcycle / Run! Although no news has been released on the official opening day yet, we now know that it will be sometime in Spring of next year. Most likely Disney will also offer a Passholder preview for this ride like they have done with others as well, which means there may be a chance to ride it even sooner.
