Disney Announces Updated runDisney Costume Policy

wine & dine half marathon weekend

Disney has recently announced a significant update to the costume policy for its popular runDisney events. In an effort to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, the new rules provide specific guidelines on what guests can and cannot wear during these races.

Let’s take a look at some of the items mentioned in a recent email sent to participants of the upcoming 2023 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon.

Costume Policy Updates

The new updates to the policy are as follows:

  • Layered costumes that could conceal prohibited items are not permitted.
  • Costume props including, without limitation, those that surround the entire body, are inflatable, or physically connect multiple participants to each other are not permitted.
  • Foam swords and all-plastic lightsabers may be permitted, however, they may not exceed 36″ in length.

New Rules To Enhance Safety & Enjoyment

The updated policy aims to strike a balance between allowing guests to express their creativity and fandom, while maintaining a safe, family-friendly environment. Under the new rules, costumes are still encouraged, but they must be suitable for running and must not pose any risk to other runners or interfere with the racing experience.

Costumes

runDisney reserves the right to deny admission to, or remove, any person wearing attire that runDisney considers inappropriate or attire that could detract from the experience of other participants and Guests. All participants may dress as their favorite character, but must follow these guidelines as determined solely by runDisney:

  • Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
  • Participants 14 and older may not wear costume masks of any kind.
  • Participants 13 and younger may wear costume masks, however, the participant’s eyes must be visible, and the mask may not cover the participant’s entire face.
  • Participants who dress like characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests except as expressly requested and authorized by runDisney.
  • Costumes may not drag on the ground.
  • Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another participant.
  • Costumes may not contain any weapons which resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
  • Layered costumes that could conceal prohibited items are not permitted.
  • Costume props including, without limitation, those that surround the entire body, are inflatable or physically connect multiple participants to each other are not permitted.
  • Tutus, transparent wings and hats/headwear are permitted; however, they may not cover the participant’s face.
  • Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.
  • Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable.
  • Participants who do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into, and/or removed from, a runDisney event unless their costume can be modified to meet the above standards.

Please note that while costumed attire may be worn during runDisney events, Guests 14 and older are not permitted to wear costumed attire in the theme parks during normal operating hours. As a result, Guests will need to change their attire prior to visiting the parks after participating in a runDisney event.

Please avoid bringing unnecessary items with you on the day of the runDisney event. Participants will not be permitted to wear or use items, costumes or props in violation of safety and costume requirements.
