Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, arguably Walt Disney World’s flagship monorail property, is undergoing significant updates, including the addition of a new Birdcage Bar in its lobby. This new feature, inspired by the resort’s original birdcage decor, is beginning to take shape with the installation of its roof. Here’s a closer look at the progress and what guests can expect from this exciting addition.
The Birdcage Bar: A New Centerpiece for the Lobby
Construction Progress
The Birdcage Bar is being constructed in the center of the Grand Floridian’s lobby, replacing the large decorative birdcage that once stood in the same location. Recent updates include:
- Vertical Framework: Steel supports have been installed to form the structure’s “walls.”
- Roof Installation: A brown roof, matching the concept art, has been added. Portions of the roof will remain exposed to maintain the birdcage aesthetic.
- Counter Frames: The base of the bar now includes frames for future counters, with an opening for Cast Member access.
Design Inspiration
The bar’s design pays homage to the original birdcage while offering a more functional and modern space. It will be wider than the original birdcage but maintain a similar height, creating a striking visual centerpiece for the lobby.
Updates to the Lobby and Check-In Area
Lobby Enhancements
The Birdcage Bar is part of a broader renovation of the Grand Floridian’s lobby. Other updates include:
- Carpet Replacement: The center lounge area will receive new carpeting to complement the bar’s design.
- Check-In Area: Construction walls have been added around the check-in area, with new wooden framing and ongoing work on the walls and ceiling.
Second-Floor Changes
On the second floor, updates include:
- Monorail Station Entry: Half of the entryway remains blocked off for wallpaper installation.
- Elevator Maintenance: One elevator is currently out of service for general maintenance.
Convention Center Roof Renovation
Exterior Work
Outside the resort, the convention center is also undergoing updates. Shingles have been removed from portions of the roof, and scaffolding is in place for further work.
