Disney’s Animal Kingdom is celebrating a special event: the birth of an African elephant calf, the first in seven years. The newborn, a baby girl named Corra, made her debut on December 13, 2023. This joyous event was part of a carefully orchestrated plan through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which ensures responsible breeding of endangered animals in managed care.
Mother & Calf Bonding Time
Corra, currently backstage at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, is spending quality time bonding with her mother, Nadirah. This is Nadirah’s first calf, making this birth even more special. Nadirah herself was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2005, hence Corra is the first second-generation calf to be born in the park.
To support Nadirah through her first birth, her sister Luna was present throughout the process. Corra will soon meet her grandmother, Donna, and her other aunt, Stella. It is a common practice for adult females in the herd to assist in raising young elephants until they are considered to be independent, typically around the age of eight.
A Carefully Monitored Pregnancy
Nadirah became pregnant through natural breeding in early 2022. Throughout her nearly 22-month pregnancy, she received special care from Disney’s animal care team. Now, under the watchful eyes of animal keepers, veterinarians, and scientists, mother and baby will undergo post-natal exams and spend several days bonding before they join the rest of the herd.
During this crucial bonding period, the elephant team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is closely observing the pair, looking out for key moments like successful nursing and significant milestones such as weight gain.
The birth of Corra is not just a joyous occasion but also a significant contribution to the conservation of this endangered species. The team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is committed to ensuring the survival and wellbeing of these majestic creatures, and Corra’s arrival is a testament to their dedication.
