Many California locals, and Disney fans in the surrounding areas, will be pleased to hear that there may be a path to reopening soon for Disneyland. Some new legislation has called for the quick reopening of Disneyland and other large California theme parks.
While Walt Disney World was able to reopen in July of 2020, Disneyland has remained shuttered since it’s closure in March 2020. Due to the restrictions in California at this time, the reopening of Disneyland appeared to be extremely far off. However, thanks to a couple of California Assembly women; Sharon Quirk Silva of Buena Park and Suzette Valladares of Santa Clarita; an opening date in 2021 now seems much more achievable.
A new bipartisan bill proposes moving theme parks such as Disneyland into the orange tier, a much less restrictive classification, allowing them to begin the opening process. This bill has received outspoken support from the California Attractions and Parks Association (CAPA). The CAPA and the Assemblywomen believe that these larger theme parks are able to open safely at this time.
This new bill is a contrast to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. In his plans, theme parks would not be able to open until the counties housing these theme parks enter into the yellow tier, which is described as fewer than one daily positive per 100,000 people.
While Orange County, where Disneyland resides, is currently in the purple, or most severe tier. Many feel that allowing the parks to open will not only help the economy in the area to heal, but also provide people with a safe area to congregate. This is something that Disney has already demonstrated their ability to do in Walt Disney World.
Although Governor Newsom has not commented on this proposed bill, many California officials believe this to be the next step in economic recovery, and a pathway for park-goers to enjoy Disneyland once again.
