Disney has postponed the reopening of Disneyland and California Adventure until a later date. The California based Disney theme parks were scheduled to reopen on July 17 pending state approval. State officials have informed Disney Parks that their proposal to reopen the parks would not be reviewed until “sometime after July 4th,” leaving Disney no choice but to delay their reopening plan.
California has seen a steady rise in coronavirus cases in recent weeks with over 7,000 new cases reported on Wednesday. The rise in cases along with negotiations with unions may also be part of Disney’s decision to delay their scheduled reopening. While Disney may like to welcome guests back to its California parks, park workers have been very vocal in expressing their concerns about reopening the parks too early. A petition on Change.org by park workers requesting the delay of Disneyland’s reopening received over 50,000 votes so far.
A new reopening date has yet to be announced by park officials.

Disney Parks executives released more good news this week, informing West Coast Disney fans that they plan to reopen Disneyland and California Adventure on July 17. Last month Disney announced that it would be reopening its Florida parks in mid July as well. While the California reopenings are not yet confirmed, Disney expects to receive approval from the California state and local governments soon.
Also included in the announcement is the planned reopening date for California’s Downtown Disney which will reopen on July 9. Disney’s Grand Californian and Paradise Pier Hotels are also planned to reopen on July 23. No additional information has been released about hotel reservations and bookings.
If the California parks reopen as planned, this will mean that 7 of the Disney’s 11 theme parks will be open by mid-July. Shanghai Disney reopened on May 11th, but Disney’s two Tokyo parks, Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris remain closed with no announced reopening dates as of yet.

Disney’s Grand Californian & Paradise Pier Hotels: July 23, 2020
Guests should expect similar rules, restrictions and capacity limits with the reopening of Disneyland and California Adventure. In Chairman Josh D’Amaro’s announcement, he mentioned that the parks will be implementing new health and safety measures in accordance with local health and government authorities. These will likely resemble the measures in place for the Disney World theme parks.
The reopening announcement has confirmed that parades and other events that attract large crowds will be temporarily suspended during the phased reopening plan. Character meet-and-greets will also be unavailable but that doesn’t mean guests will not be able to see characters throughout the parks. According to the Disney Parks Blog, “characters will be in the parks in new ways to entertain and delight guests.”
Similar to what was announced for Disney World, Disneyland will have an online reservation system for park entry as capacity will be “significantly limited” to allow for proper social distancing. The announcement specifically addressed Annual Passholders, stating that AP’s will be able to obtain a park entry reservation in advance. However, unlike in Florida, AP sales and renewals have both been temporarily suspended along with sales of new tickets.
