You don’t need a park ticket to experience one of Walt Disney World’s most beautiful resorts. Whether you’re looking for a quiet afternoon or an easy resort-hopping day, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Jambo House is the perfect place to slow down and soak in the details.
Start In The Lobby
Start your visit by simply wandering through the stunning lobby. Towering thatched ceilings, hand-carved woodwork, and one of the largest collections of authentic African art outside of Africa make the resort feel like a museum as much as a hotel. Take your time exploring where you’ll notice new artwork and artifacts around every corner, and Cast Members are often happy to share stories about the pieces.
If you’re visiting around the right time, keep an eye out for the surprise character appearances in the lobby. Rather than a traditional meet-and-greet, characters will occasionally stop by to get guests involved with dancing, cheering, and playful interactions. It’s one of those unexpected moments that makes a resort visit feel uniquely Disney.
Head Outside
After exploring, head outside to one of the savanna overlooks to watch giraffes, zebras, ankole cattle, and dozens of other African animals roaming just steps away. Animal guides are frequently stationed along the overlooks and can answer questions about the wildlife, making it a fun stop even if you aren’t staying overnight. There are lots of hidden design gems around the resort, including a hidden lion face in the front staircase!
Time To Eat
When it’s time to eat, Boma – Flavors of Africa is the signature choice. The buffet has earned a loyal following for its mix of familiar favorites and African-inspired dishes, making it approachable even for adventurous eaters. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for breakfast and dinner, so be sure to plan ahead if it’s on your must-do list.
Can’t get a reservation? Don’t worry, you won’t leave hungry. Just downstairs is The Mara, one of Disney’s most underrated quick-service restaurants. Along with sandwiches, bowls, and other hearty options, it’s also one of the easiest places to grab the famous Zebra Domes to go. Even if you’re not ready for a full meal, they’re worth stopping for.
One of my favorite places in Jambo House is the massive stone fireplace tucked away in the lobby. It’s the perfect place to escape the Florida heat with a coffee or snack from The Mara. Some longtime Disney fans swear they hear a soft humming or low resonating sound near the fireplace, adding to the cozy atmosphere, although Disney has never officially explained it. Whether it’s intentional or simply part of the building’s acoustics, it gives the space an extra bit of mystery.
Evening Activities
If you’re planning to stay into the evening, check that day’s recreation schedule posted near the front desk. Activities change throughout the week, but one of the most popular offerings is the Starlight Safari, a separately ticketed nighttime tour that takes guests onto the savanna after dark for a completely different view of the animals. Availability is limited, so it’s worth checking in advance if it’s something you’d like to experience. The daily schedule also includes other complimentary activities that can make your visit even more memorable.
Whether you’re enjoying a meal, searching for hidden details in the artwork, watching animals roam the savanna, or simply relaxing by the fireplace, Jambo House proves that some of Walt Disney World’s best experiences don’t require stepping inside a theme park.
