The landscape of Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues to evolve with the upcoming reimagining of the Animation Courtyard area. As the park moves away from the Star Wars Launch Bay theme in this specific location, it returns to its roots with a new offering titled The Magic of Disney Animation.

This summer, guests will have the opportunity to explore a dedicated space that celebrates the art of filmmaking and animation. Disney has recently released specific details regarding the character interactions that will be a central part of this experience.

Character Meet and Greet Locations

The new meet-and-greet area is officially named “Off the Page.” This section is designed to simulate various departments within a working animation studio. Rather than a standard queue and backdrop, each character is positioned in a setting that reflects a specific stage of the animation process. There are six distinct areas where guests can interact with characters.

  • Mulan will be located in the Story department. Her backdrop features an oversized storyboard panel, representing the initial narrative planning phase of a film.
  • Rapunzel can be found in the Layout department. Her environment is inspired by the multiplane camera, a significant innovation in animation history that added depth to two-dimensional scenes. Guests will see layers of backgrounds and painted cells in this area.
  • Chip n’ Dale are set to appear in the Hand-Drawn Animation section. This classic duo represents the traditional methods of 2D animation that built the foundation of the studio.
  • Donald and Daisy Duck will greet guests in the CG Animation department. This area highlights the modern computer-generated techniques used in many recent Disney films.
  • Goofy is stationed in the Lighting department. This section focuses on how lighting affects mood and depth in animated features.
  • Stitch rounds out the lineup in the Effects department. This character choice pairs well with the chaotic and dynamic nature of special effects animation.

Educational Aspects of the Experience

The “Off the Page” area is not just about photographs and autographs. It serves as an educational walk-through of the production pipeline. By organizing characters into departments like Story, Layout, and Effects, Disney provides guests with a tangible representation of how an animated movie is created.

This project is a collaborative effort between Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios. Dan Abraham, a director at the studio, noted that the experience allows guests to see a bit of history while they wait. The intent is to inspire visitors by immersing them in the legacy of the studio, potentially sparking an interest in the animation industry for future generations.

Conclusion

The addition of “Off the Page” to Disney’s Hollywood Studios marks a significant update for the park. By combining popular characters with educational themes about the animation process, Disney aims to offer a multi-layered experience. Guests visiting later this summer can look forward to these six new photo opportunities as part of The Magic of Disney Animation expansion.
